I first started massaging dogs when one of my own dogs had 2 stifle ligament operations and also got hung up in a fence after chasing a rabbit. She is a boxer lab so quite a heavy build – though not over weight – and so it was very difficult for her to get up on her own. I spent a lot of time with her trying to help her muscles and range of movement and eventually she came right. She is still going strong to this day at 11 years old.
hard days working on the farm I used to get them all to stand on a stump one at a time and give them a massage. Of course they all thought it was the best thing ever and then constantly pestered me for more after that!
More recently I have been working on agility dogs and some more pet dogs with great success. I find the agility dogs really interesting as they are basically doing what horses are doing in jumping and games. Dogs seem to get a lot more wear and tear on their bodies because they are constantly on the go and don’t rest as much as horses do.
I find it very rewarding working on dogs as they are so expressive and seem so grateful after you have helped them. I also have the odd cat that jumps up on my massage table but I generally don’t work on many of those!
